Leone Erskine was born in 1898 in Door County Wisconsin, and later became a school teacher in a one room school house in Door County. After raising three children, at the age of 62 Leone decided to pursue her passion and obtained a university degree in fine art under the teacher who inspired her work, Sister Thomasita. As well as a passion for art, Leone loved nature or "natural history" as she called it, and cared for the environment. Even though I only knew her for her last few years of her life, until she died at 103, Leone (my great-grandmother), and the stories my family tells me about her continue to inspire me. As I am trying to figure out my future, I feel a connection to her because of our similar interest in art and sustaining our environment.
